Hope...such a small, simple word but what a significant difference it makes. With it, seemingly insurmountable odds are overcome. Without it, the smallest challenge becomes one’s undoing. The literal meaning of hope is, “A feeling of expectation, a desire for a certain thing to happen, a feeling of trust.” Our world is currently navigating unprecedented, treacherous waters; the global crisis has become extremely personal for many. Fear, panic, hysteria and anxiety run rampant through much of society. But, as children of the Most High God, we must not give into the impulses of the carnal mind. Get into the Word of God: it is filled to the brim, cover to cover, with life-giving words of hope, faith and peace! Psalm 42:11,” Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” Lamentations 3:24-26, “The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25 The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.” Romans 5:3-5 (NKJV), ” And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans 15:13, “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” Hope and Faith are first cousins: together they produce peace of body, soul, mind and spirit in the one who exercises them. Fear and doubt produce the exact opposite; guard your heart and mind against these two impostors. Hope in the God of hope, have faith and trust in our Great God – He will NOT fail to bring us through what He has brought us to! Those who hope in God will not be ‘brought to shame’ or disappointed in the outcome. Remember the definition of HOPE: expectation, desire, trust! What an incredibly opportune time for the Church to stand and be the Church! People’s lives are totally disrupted and upended; many are apprehensive of possible dire social and economic repercussions. They see no way out of the maze and are without direction. This is where the Church comes into the picture: we know the Way! Reach out to family, friends and neighbors: love, encourage, comfort, serve. By doing all of this, we prove to the world we are the disciples of Jesus Christ: His hands and feet on terra firma. And, in this, He is well pleased.
